Creative Director, “Flow” Experience
Center for Netherlandish Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

An immersive, interactive environment inspires curiosity about 17th-century Netherlands by showing its complexities, contradictions, and connections to our modern era.

“Flow” is the introduction to the brilliantly reinstalled Netherlandish Art galleries at the MFA, Boston. It presents masterful works of Dutch and Flemish painters at the architectural scale, and layers in presence-responsive storytelling moments. From revealing the first speculative market crash over 🌷, to uncovering Dutch connections to the sea through their idioms, to revealing the many ways Netherlandish wealth was connected to the Transatlantic slave trade, these layers aim to help visitors see these often familiar works in a new light.

Content layers—over 30 in total—feature easter eggs and animation flourishes that reward close looking.

Room-sweeping transitions reveal the logic behind the angular grid that underpins the experience: the meridian lines of a 17th-century navigation map.
